Hugo Meyer van den Berg

Meyer concentrates primarily on mining, energy, environment, competition (anti-trust) and general corporate and commercial work.

Meyer van den Berg holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, a Bachelor’s Degree (with Honours) cum laude in Classical Literature (Latin), a Master’s Degree cum laude in South African and Namibian Mineral Law and a PhD in South African and Namibian Petroleum Law. He studied at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town and was a research associate at these institutions. He commenced his articles of clerkship with Koep & Partners in January 2009 and was admitted as attorney in June 2010. He is a partner and Koep & Partners and is also admitted as a notary. He is a member of the International Bar Association and the Namibian Law Society’s Law Reform Committee, Commercial Law Committee and Legal Education and Professional Development Committee.

Meyer regularly contributes to books and accredited and practice-oriented publications on various topics, including competition, mining, labour, environment and oil and gas. He is currently contributing editor to Mineral Law and Policy in Namibia and co-author of Namibian Labour Law and Practice, both of which are expected to be published by Juta & Co Ltd during 2016. He is also a co-author of Juta & Co Ltd’s Mineral and Petroleum Law of South Africa and is responsible for the chapters on petroleum, diamonds, gas, black economic empowerment, precious metals and mineral research.

Meyer is a Quality Controller for the World Bank Group’s African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) Project, developed in partnership with the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) and the University of Cape Town. He is also Project Leader for the Mineral Law in Africa (MLiA) Project, hosted by the University of Cape Town. He regularly visits the University of Cape Town as a guest lecturer for the mineral law courses offered to final year and post-graduate students.
