Environmental Management Act 7 of 2007 comes into operation.

The Environmental Management Act 7 of 2007 came into operation on the 6th of February 2012. This Act has potentially far-reaching consequences, especially with regard to environmental assessment.

For example, the Regulations that accompany the Act list a number of activities that may not be undertaken without an environmental clearance certificate issued in terms of the Act. These activities are extensive and will impact numerous industries.

Furthermore, the Act states that any clearance certificate issued before the commencement of the Act (6 February 2012) remains in force for one year. If a person wishes to continue with the activities covered by the clearance certificate, he or she must apply for a new certificate in terms of the Environmental Management Act.
